Reblogging this again, because — costume or not — this is a great example of why it’s important to have role models who look like us. Our children need to have this. Our daughters need to have more WoC to look up to, they need examples of women with their natural hair, so they can be proud of their own hair; they need examples of women with dark skin, so they can be proud of their own dark skin. They need women who look like them to be admired, not reviled, so they can understand what it is to be admired, and not reviled, and what it is to admire the women around them, and what it is to not revile those women, and thereby themselves.
How can anyone look at this little girl and not understand that?
